This all began in May of 2015. One minute I was walking out of a friend's bathroom, and the next thing I knew I was waking up in the back of an ambulance with an EMT telling me they thought I'd had a seizure. They took me to King's Daughters Medical Center ER. I was there for several hours, they told me I'd had grand mal seizure and sent me home.
A few days later I was cooking in my brother's kitchen, only to wake up looking at the same EMT on the way to the same ER. Once again, they told me I'd had a grand mal and sent me home.
The next time it happened I was at my brother's once again, and when I woke up the EMT joked about having known who he was coming for when he got the call because it was the third time in a little over a week. That time my husband insisted that they take me to another local hospital, Our Lady of Bellefonte, where they quickly admitted me for observation and further testing.
I was given an EEG the next day and determined to have "generalized idiopathic epilepsy, not intractable, without status epilepticus" according to the medical terms. They started me on Dilantin and sent me home a few days later. The Dilantin helped reduce the seizures, but I continue to have them at a rate of approximately one a week, and the EMTs in my area know me by name.
I have tried to talk my husband out of sending me to the hospital after ever grand mal, but he insists because they can result in life threatening occurrences such as heart failure. Because of my weekly seizures neither of us can work because he has to be home to monitor me and care for our children in case of emergency. We have 3 boys; one who lives with us full time, Adam age 7, and 2 who are his from a previous relationship and are only with us part of the time, Jacob age 9 and David age 8.
He is able to work on computers and do landscaping work and still does on the occasion that I am with my brother or my friends. Our rent is due on the first of every month, and though we live in government housing which is income based, residents with no income still have a rent fee of $40 that is due on the first, and if it is not paid by the 5th of each month there is a $15 late fee added. This makes our monthly rent $55, as we have been behind for some time and the late fee is applied monthly.
There is also an electricity fee that's based on usage added to our account with the housing authority once every three months. We are currently behind $495, and though my landlord has been patient, he is growing very frustrated with our lack of payment due to the fact we have not been able to pay anything in two months. My brother and sister-in-law help us with household and personal care items from the Dollar Tree, but are not able to help with anything more.
